Ya its called that because when a pilot pulls the ejection handle's it feels like he/she just got punched from the sheer force of the ejection

also used to be literal, since during the days of props (WW2), pilots would have to punch through the canopy to get out (like in Pearl Harbor). However, some seats also come with a 'punch' spike on the seat, which will shatter the canopy if it's still in the way.
